Character NAME: Yuma Chitose.
Canon & MEDIUM: Puella Magi Oriko Magica (manga)
Canon PULL-POINT: The end of chapter 7, the final chapter, right before Homura rewinds time.
Character AGE: Somewhere between 6-8 years old.
Character ABILITIES: Yuma is a Puella Magi, a girl who has made a contract and had a wish granted by Kyubey. As such, her soul takes the form of a Soul Gem, which allows her to use magic. As her soul is separated from her body, Yuma is incredibly difficult to kill: damage to her body will do very little, and killing her requires destroying her Soul Gem.
Soul Gems slowly become corrupted when the owners of them use magic, and they require cleansing with Grief Seeds, or else Yuma will turn into a witch herself. Yuma will be bringing 2 Grief Seeds with her.
Aside from those things, which are traits all Puella Magi share, Yuma has two major powers particular to her: healing and attacking.
Her healing ability allows her to heal incredibly large and deadly wounds. She was able to reattach all four limbs to a person’s body soon after they were torn off with no ill-effects. Of course, she has her limits and cannot heal people who have already died from their wounds, which means she must be quick to act when trying to heal someone.
Her attacks come from a staff, which causes tremors when she hits slams it down onto the ground. The tremors make it very difficult for an enemy to move. She can also use this staff to attack directly, and damage an enemy when she hits them with it.
She can use both her offensive and healing magics at the same time, dealing damage and helping her allies in one move.
Character HISTORY: Note: The events of this series take place in a timeline/universe parallel to the main Madoka Magicaone, and therefore has inconstancies from it.
The year is 2011. Yuma Chitose, an ordinary Japanese girl, happened to have an extraordinary encounter. While out with her parents one day, strange, unearthly flowers began to bloom around her. Not realizing that she had wandered into the alternate-dimension barrier formed by a creature called a witch, she looked around for her parents. She saw her mother, covered in blood, being pulled apart by them, and ran, afraid for her life. She manages to survive until the witch is defeated and killed by one Kyoko Sakura, a Puella Magi. Kyoko takes pity on Yuma and feeds her, telling her what exactly happened to her family. Yuma, hearing about Kyoko’s power and duty to kill witches, decides she wants to become a Puella Magi as well. Kyoko quickly tries to squash that idea, as the life lived by Puella Magi is dangerous and lonely, but Yuma has nowhere else to go and is all alone already. Kyoko tells her off again, but still takes Yuma with her and teaches her how to break-in and steal in order to survive. The two slowly become close, with Kyoko playing the role of older sister for Yuma. While checking her for wounds after a witch hunt, Kyoko discovers that Yuma has burn marks on her head from cigarettes. Yuma reveals that her father was never around, and her mother took her frustration out by abusing her daughter.
Yuma again expresses her desire to be like Kyoko and become a Puella Magi, and is told by a small white creature that she mistakes for a plush toy that it’s possible for her to become one. This is Kyubey, the one who makes contracts with girls to grant their wishes. In exchange, they become Puella Magi and fight witches. Kyoko again tries to stop Yuma from contracting, and tells Kyubey to leave. Before he does, though, Kyubey tells them of a group of Puella Magi who were murdered by another Puella Magi.
Yuma interoperates Kyoko’s refusal to let her contract as a sign that Kyoko thinks she is useless, like her parents did, and only strengthens her fear of abandonment. That evening, Kyoko leaves their hotel room in the middle of the night to fight another witch, leaving Yuma sleeping alone. When she wakes up and starts to look for her companion, it makes her perfect prey for the Puella Magi named Oriko Mikuni. Oriko tells her that Kyoko is going to die, using Yuma’s insecurities against her as she rushes out to find the older girl before it’s too late.
Just as Kyoko’s limps are torn off, Yuma makes a pact with Kyubey to save her. This gives Yuma the power to heal. Kyoko is incredibly angry that Yuma disobeyed her, especially because Yuma used her wish to save her. Yuma begs for forgiveness after she tells Kyoko the story about Oriko and cries that she’ll do anything as long as Kyoko doesn’t leave her. Kyoko vows revenge against Oriko for causing her ward to contract.
A few days later, Yuma and Kyoko meet up with another Puella Magi named Mami Tomoe. Mami is investigating the murders Kyubey told them about, but Kyoko has no new information for her. When Mami stares at Kyoko, thinking “how strange”, Yuma thinks that Mami is bullying her friend, and flips the older girl’s skirt. As Mami cries, Yuma declares that she’ll defend Kyoko against anyone who would hurt her, even though Kyoko doesn’t think Mami was doing this. While Yuma tries to explain this, Kyoko reassures her that she understands.
Some days later, Yuma and Kyoko are told by Kyubey that Mami is in danger. Oriko and her partner, Kirika, have created a witch’s barrier around Mami’s school, filled with a witch’s familiars who are killing the students and teachers trapped inside. They arrive just in time to save Mami from being overwhelmed inside. Together, they enter the center of the barrier, where yet another Puella Magi, Homura, is battling the pair responsible for the barrier.
Realizing they are outnumbered, Kirika uses a desperate tactic: turning herself into a witch. With this, the girls realize the truth behind their contracts. They try to fight the new witch, but their inability to accept the truth hinders and distracts them. As Yuma watches and tries her best to fight, Mami and Kyoko get in one another’s way and end up crashing into one another. When she tries to heal them, the pair refuse her help. They tell her that they’d rather die there than turn into such a monster someday. Oriko and the witch try to finish them off, but Yuma fights them off and heals her friends. She tells them that she wanted to die when her mother abused her. Now, she desperately wants to survive after trying her hardest to escape the witch that killed her parents. Even if they turn into witches, they still can live in the meantime, because everyone will die eventually. These words reach Mami and Kyoko, pulling them back from the brink of despair. The three try to fight again, and this time, the combination of attacks destroys the witch. Oriko is nearly out of magic, herself, and is on the verge of turning into a witch. She has almost no options left, but continues to fight.
Oriko, who has the power of foresight, knew that a girl named Madoka had great magical potential. Madoka’s inevitable transformation into a witch would mean the end of the world. A student at the school, Madoka, is a good friend of Homura’s. Homura’s wish was to protect Madoka, and to do this, she has been given the power to stop and travel backwards through time. This timeline is one that Homura has travelled through trying to save Madoka from making a contract and eventually dying or becoming a witch. Oriko decided to distract Kyubey with Yuma and the murders (which were carried out by Kirika) so that she could find and kill Madoka before that happened. Her goal was to stop the end of the world, but Homura is not ready to give up her hope of saving her friend. Unfortunately for her, Kyubey figured out Oriko’s plan and discovered Madoka’s existence.
Homura destroys Oriko’s Soul Gem, the source of power and life for Puella Magi, and in a last ditch effort, Oriko shoots out one last attack. This blow hits Madoka, who had just arrived to try and help her friend Homura. Yuma is asked if she can save Madoka with her healing ability, but it’s too late. The girl has died, and Homura must once again rewind time to try and save her. This will create a parallel world and let Homura start again in a fresh timeline where none of this has yet to occur. Just as Homura is about to do this, Yuma is pulled into Adstringendum.
Character PERSONALITY: Yuma is very much like your average grade-schooler in some ways. She cries easily, clings to the older people in her life, whines about the food she doesn’t like and gets excited over simple things like fluffy pillows. She even switches between speaking in the first and third persons and can easily change from smiling to sobbing in moments if things are not going her way. This isn’t an act so much as it’s just how she is: emotional and a somewhat mentally fragile.
Under the surface of all this, it’s clear that Yuma suffers from the aftereffects of long-term parental abuse and watching said parents being torn apart while still alive. She is deathly afraid of being alone and will do nearly anything to prevent it. She fears being useless, as that is what her abusive mother called her, and will put herself in harm’s way to prove that she isn’t. Her insecurity often rules over her better judgment in this way.
Yuma is a very headstrong girl. While she will listen and follow directions from those she looks up to, she will not heed them if she thinks they are wrong or she thinks they believe she can’t do it. Because of her fear, she sometimes makes rash decisions to prove them wrong so that they will still need and want her around. She believes that if she can do something to help, she should be allowed to do it, even if it’s at terrible cost. Yuma has no qualms about talking back and arguing with people, even those she holds a great deal of respect for.
Yuma is also incredibly loyal and protective, especially to Kyoko Sakura, the girl who took her in after her parents were killed. If she believes her friends are being bullied or threatened, she doesn’t hesitate to act. Yuma has no problem beating back an enemy on her own or bullying someone in return in order to keep her friends happy and safe. This reinforces her need to be needed by making herself useful to them by letting her actually help them in her own way.
She has a very strong survival instinct. Yuma was the only one to survive an attack by a witch on her family, and even after realizing her ultimate fate as a magical girl, she refuses to give up, unlike her older friends. She wants to live and face all the things to come, good and bad. She is idealistic, even with all her trauma and fear, and wants to believe that justice can prevail and evil can be defeated. She wants to trust that the world can be a better place, if only for themselves, if they fight on and don’t give up.
» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
Chosen WEAPON: Yuma’s weapon will be a small shield, hidden in the form of a small metal disc on a bracelet. It’s small to start with, expanding only to about a foot in diameter, but it’s big enough to protect a large portion of Yuma’s body in an emergency.
As she becomes more proficient with it, the shield will be able to grow larger and will be able to bend, until it can encircle her entire body or act as temporary body armor.
Character INVENTORY: Yuma is a poor orphan, so she’ll be bringing in a small backpack with one change of clothes, the clothes she’s wearing, and her Soul Gem.
